Tom Alter is a British actor most prominently known for his work in Hindi language Indian cinema. He is also a thespian and a television actor. Alter lives between the Indian city of Mumbai, and England.

Alter was uniquely talented for his fluency in Hindi and knowledge of Indian culture. He worked for noted filmmakers like Richard Attenborough in Shatranj Ke Khiladi
and Ismail Merchant. In the 1993 film Sardar, Alter portrayed Lord Mountbatten in this biography of Indian leader Sardar Patel that focused on the events surrounding the partition and independence of India. Since then, Alter has played Indian characters in Indian television series. In the long-running Junoon, Alter played the sadistic mob-lord Keshav Kalsi.
