Biography

Born in Surin Province of northeastern Thailand, Jaa became a protege of veteran Thai stuntman and action-film director Panna Rittikrai. He initially worked as a stuntman, appearing in many of Panna's films. He also was in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
.

His break-out role as a leading man was Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior (องค์บาก) (2003). Jaa did all the stunts in this movie without mechanical assistance or computer-generated effects. He cites Bruce Lee, Jet Li and Jackie Chan as his inspirations, although his fighting style in Ong-Bak remains loyal to his Thai roots. Included in his style are extreme acrobatics and speedy, dance-like, moves.

His second major movie is Tom-Yum-Goong
(ต้มยำกุ้ง; also the name of a spicy sweet-and-sour soup, Tom yum kung (ต้มยำกุ้ง)). This movie enjoyed even greater success in Thailand and Hong Kong than Ong-Bak when released.

Since the release of Ong-Bak, Jaa has been busy touring the world to promote his films. He is skilled in Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Aikido, Pencak Silat, Krabi Krabong, gymnastics, and track & field. He speaks Thai, Khmer and is learning English.

As he's gained popularity, older films he made with Panna have begun to become available. His name also has been attached to various projects. Variety has reported that Tony Jaa's next film will be called The Man of Thousand Poisons, while in Thailand he's known to be working on a picture called Sword or Dab Atamas.
