Vasily Makarovich Shukshin (Russian: Васи́лий Макарович Шукшин; 25 July 1929 – 2 October 1974) was a notable Russian actor, writer, screenplay writer and movie director from the Altai region who specialized in rural themes. Upon his death, Shukshin was interred at Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.BiographyVasiliy Makarovich Shukshin was born on 25 July 1929 in the peasant family. His father, Makar Leont'evich Shukshin was arrested and shot in 1933, during the collectivization. Mother, Mary Sergeyevna (mother name - Popov) took upon herself all concerns about the family. In spite of all difficulties she lived until the deep old age. In 1943 Shukshin finished 7 classes of village school and enters Biysk automobile technical school. He studies there two and one-half of year; however, He didn't finishes the technical school. Instead of this in 1945 he goes to work in a kolkhoz.In 1946 Shukshin leaves his native village. In 1947 - 1949 Shukshin works as metal craftsman at several enterprises in the trust Soyuzprommekhanizatsiya: at the turbine plant in Kaluga, at the Tractor Plant in Vladimir. In 1949 Shukshin has been mobilized to serve into the Navy. First he is sailor in the Baltic fleet, then radio operator on the Black Sea. In 1953 he has been demobilized from the fleet because of the revealed stomach ulcer, and he returns to the village. In the native village Shukshin passes an external student examination to receive the secondary school graduation certificate in the Srostkinskoy secondary school № 32. He goes to work as a teacher of Russian language and literature in the Srostkinskeye school of rural young people. Later he was also the principal of this school. In 1954 Shukshin enters the producer department of the VGIK, and concludes it in 1960. During the studies in the VGIK in 1958 Shukshin had his first main role in M. Khutsiyev's film "Two Fedors" and published his first story "Two on the cart" in the magazine Smena. The first Shukshin's book - "Rural inhabitants" - published in 1963 by the publishing house "Molodaya Gvardiya". In the same year he begins to work as the director at the Gor'ky motion picture studio. Produced the film Живёт такой парень ("There Is Such a Lad") based on his own screenplay. Film debuts in 1965. This film is honored by the highest reward at the All-Union film festival in Leningrad and the main reward of the XVI International Film Festival in Venice - "Gold Lion of Saint Mark". In November of 1967 by the Decree of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR Shukshin is rewarded with the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. In 1969 for his merits in the field of Soviet cinematography he is honored the title of the Honoured Worker of the Arts of the RSFSR (заслуженного деятеля искусств РСФСР). On 1974-10-02 Shukshin suddenly passed away in the period of filmings "They battled for the native land", on the motor ship "Danube". He is buried in Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. Filmography
