| Vyjayantimala (born 1936) is an Indian film actress. She began acting in Tamil films in the late 1940s before crossing over into Hindi film (Bollywood) in 1954's Nagin. The 1955 remake of Devdas, in which she played the dancing girl Chandramukhi, won her critical acclaim. She won three Filmfare Best Actress Awards, for Sadhana (1958), Gunga Jumna (1961), and Sangam (1964). Her performance as Shalu in Vijay Anand's Jewel Thief (1967) is also memorable. Vyjayantimala stopped acting in the 1970s. She got involved in politics in the 1980s and 90s and represented the Congress Party in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha before stepping down in 1999. She subsequently joined the Hindu fundamentalist BJP party.
