Plot summary

In the small town of Endora, Iowa, Gilbert Grape (played by Johnny Depp) is busy caring for his mentally handicapped brother, Kevin Lennox. His morbidly obese mother, Sandy, has not left the house in years and spends almost all of her time on the couch, eating and watching television. With Kevin's father, Scott, working at the egg factory and his mother unable to care for her children, Gilbert has taken responsibility for repairing the old house and looking after his brother, who has the unfortunate habit of climbing up the town water tower. A new "Food Pride" supermarket has opened, threatening the small grocery store where Gilbert works.

As the film begins, the family is preparing for Kevin's 18th birthday, a major milestone given his medical condition. Just then, a young woman named Becky (Juliette Lewis) and her grandmother are stuck in town when the truck pulling their mobile home breaks down. When Gilbert first sees Becky, he begins to rethink his life. His unusual, chaotic home life threatens to get in the way of their budding romance.

Awards and nominations

Depp and DiCaprio received critical acclaim for their work in this picture, with DiCaprio receiving Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actor.
