William Gargan (July 17, 1905 – February 17, 1979) is a motion picture and television actor. Gargan played character roles in many Hollywood productions. However, he is best known for his role as Detective Martin Kane on the 1949-51 televsion series. Gargan's career came to an end in 1958 when he developed throat cancer. Doctors were forced to remove his larynx. Speaking through an artificial voice box, Gargan became an activist and speaker for the American Cancer Society.
