| William Jonathan Humphrey (January 2,1875 - October 4,1942) American actor and film director since 1908. Born in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, William Humphrey was a well-known member of Vitagraph Studio's early stock company. Without the romantic looks to become a real star, he nevertheless played leads in Shakespeare and other important studio productions of the day. In the late silent era he, with other original Vitagraph actors such as Florence Turner, Maurice Costello and Flora Finch, was kept on the MGM payroll for expert playing of character roles. For this studio he had roles in 1924's Laurette Taylor vehicle "One Night in Rome,"' and "The Actress" starring Norma Shearer (1928). He continued in films until 1937.
