"You've Got a Habit of Leaving" is a song written by David Bowie in 1965 and released as a single under the name Davy Jones & the Lower Third. With the Lower Third Bowie (who was still just called David Jones) moved away from Americanised RnB of the two earlier singles into Who-sounding mod music. A typical concert, however, could incorporate "Mars" from Gustav Holst's The Planets and a cover of "Chim Chim Cheree". Bowie's future manager Ken Pitt attended one of these mid-60's concerts, where Bowie finished with Judy Garland's song "When You Walk Through a Storm".

Both songs on the single was re-released by EMI in the UK in March 1979 on the B-side of a 7". On the A-side of this re-release was the two songs from the previous single "I Pity the Fool
" and "Take My Tip". This version was again released by See For Miles Records in October 1982, and as a 12" picture disc in June 1985. The re-release by See For Miles in 1982 took the edge off a collector's market since EMI's March 1979 reissue disappeared almost as quickly as it had arrived.
It also appeared on the compilation Early On (1964-1966) from 1991.
Bowie recorded a new version of the song, nearly twice as long, in 2000 for the unreleased Toy album. This version appeared on the European release of the single "Slow Burn
" and the UK release of the single "Everyone Says 'Hi'
