Athletes - Al Groh

Al Groh (born July 13, 1944 in New York City, New York) is the current head coach of the University of Virginia college football team and the former head coach of the New York Jets of the NFL. Previous to head coaching the Jets, he was a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells
for the New York Giants and New England Patriots.

Like fellow Jets coaching alum Pete Carroll
, Groh coached the New York Jets for one year. During his year with the Jets in 1999, Groh was 9-7 (Carroll went 6-10 as head coach for the team in 1994).

At Virginia, Groh has become known for his implementing a 3-4 defense (rare for the college game) and for maintaining his NFL mentality. In addition to placing several players in the NFL, two assistant coaches are now head coaches at other Division I-A programs (Kansas State and Temple). Groh has maintained from when he took the job that he hoped to build a network of Groh proteges throughout college football's coaching ranks.

Groh was earlier the head coach at Wake Forest and an assistant at Army and UNC.

Controversies

Groh came under some fire after the September 11, 2001 attacks for a response to a reporter's question about whether he and his team should be afraid to fly their charter plane to Clemson soon thereafter: "I'm not saying this to make light of it by any means, but I'm not planning on having Arabs in the traveling party, so therefore I think probably that the threat of our being hijacked is pretty remote." When the comment spread throughout the media, Groh apologized, and the President of the University of Virginia John T. Casteen III made comments about the inappropriateness of the remarks.
