Al Jefferson (born January 4, 1985 in Monticello, Mississippi) is a professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics of the NBA.

High school career

Jefferson attended Prentiss High School in Prentiss, Mississippi. As a senior, he was a 2004 McDonalds All-America selection, and was a finalist for the Naismith Award, after he averaged 42 points and 16 rebounds per game during the season.

Pro Career

Al Jefferson was drafted out of high school with the 15th pick by the Boston Celtics in the 2004 NBA Draft, becoming the first high school player to be drafted by the Celtics (Kendrick Perkins was drafted by the Grizzlies, then traded to Boston on draft day). He plays power forward and averaged 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game during his rookie season.

Jefferson's performance in the 2004/2005 season was solid for a rookie who had just come out of high school. Many loyal Celtic fans believe that within a few years he will become one of the better power forwards in the game.

Jefferson currently wears number 7 for the Celtics. At the start of his Celtic career he wore the number 8, but after the Celtics traded for Antoine Walker, who had worn number 8 during his first stint with the Celtics, Jefferson gave Walker his old number back.
