Athletes - Alex Cora

José Alexander (Alex) Cora (born October 18, 1975 in Caguas, Puerto Rico) is an utility infielder in Major League Baseball who currently plays with the Boston Red Sox. Previously, Cora played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2004) and Cleveland Indians (2005). He bats left-handed and throws right-handed.

Cora was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1993, but did not sign a contract, and ended up being drafted a second time in 1996, this time by the Dodgers. Cora played his first major-league game in 1998, and spent the next seven years in Los Angeles, hitting .246 with 27 home runs and 173 RBI in 684 games.

During the 2004 offseason, Cora signed as a free agent with Cleveland. In 2005, he appeared in 49 games for the Indians, with 22 starts at shortstop and 14 at second base, and hit .205 with a home run and eight RBI. On July 7, he was traded to Boston for infielder Ramón Vázquez
.

In Boston, Cora was originally intended to provide a cushion for shortstop Edgar Rentería
. However, with the trade of Renteria to the Atlanta Braves, Cora was being eyed to take the position of starting shortstop. Shortly afterward, the Red Sox acquired Alex Gonzalez to start. Although Gonzalez receives more attention, Cora is very simaler defensively and offensively. Also, he is a favorite of the Red Sox coaching staff for his heads-up play and knowledge of the game. Don't be surprised to see Gonzalez and Cora battle it out for a starting spot.

Alex is the younger brother of former MLB utility player, Joey Cora
. He is often mistaken for his brother and has earned the dubious nickname of Joey Cora, Jr.
