| Ariel Pestano (Valdes) (born January 31,1974)—better known as el veterano "the veteran"—is the tough-as-nails Cuban catcher with great defensive skills, and is known as one of the greatest catchers in Cuban history. Although Cuban baseball history is filled with many outstanding players, he is one of the few real stars left of his time who still play in Cuba. He has won both silver and gold medals in the Olympics and also played catcher on Cuba's World Baseball Classic team in March 2006. He is also a well known professor. He has played with Cuban superstars like Orlando Hernandez, Livan Hernandez and Jose Contreras.
