Asante Samuel (born January 6, 1981 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida) is an American football cornerback for the New England Patriots. Drafted from the University of Central Florida by the Patriots in 2003. He was put in as a starter after injuries to both starters, Tyrone Poole and Ty Law in the 2004 season, and started Super Bowl XXXIX.

High school career

Asante Samuel attended Boyd H. Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. As a junior quarterback, he threw for 1,800 yards, and rushed for 500 yards. As a senior, he concentrated on defense, and earned All-State honors, after he totalled 4 interceptions and 75 tackles.

College career

At the University of Central Florida, Asante Samuel finished his career with 127 tackles (102 solo tackles, 25 assisted tackles), 8 interceptions, and a school-record 38 passes deflected (the previous record was 34 deflections), and also returned 63 punts for 673 yards (10.68 yards per punt return).
