| Robert Lee Caruthers (January 5 1864 - August 5 1911), nicknamed "Parisian Bob," was an American right-handed pitcher and right fielder in Major League Baseball whom some sources recognize as having compiled the highest career winning percentage in major league history (among pitchers retired as of 2006) during a 10-year career from 1884 to 1893. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Caruthers played for the St. Louis Browns (1884-87, 1892), Brooklyn Bridegrooms/Grooms (1888-1891), Chicago Colts (1893) and Cincinnati Reds (1893). Caruthers is perhaps one of the most deserving people who should be in the Hall of Fame but isn't. Most sources recognize him as having compiled 218 wins and 99 losses, making his .688 winning percentage 5th all-time behind Pedro Martínez, Whitey Ford, Dave Foutz and Tim Hudson among pitchers with at least 200 major league decisions. However, that is based on a total of 10 losses in the 1892 season (his last as a pitcher), a total revised from the contemporary record due to historical research; the official league records for that year charged him with only 8 losses, a figure which some other sources also recognize. The reduction of two losses would increase his career winning percentage to .691, which would place him behind only Martínez (through the 2005 season). Caruthers led the American Association in wins in 1885 and 1889 (both seasons with 40 wins). He threw 298 career complete games, 24 shutouts, had a career ERA of 2.83, and career WHIP of 1.158 in 2828.7 innings pitched. Caruthers was a skilled hitter as well, batting .282 lifetime and finishing among the league's top five hitters in 1886 and 1887. In 1886, Caruthers had a season for the ages; he went 30-14 as a pitcher and, also playing in the outfield, led the league in OPS. Caruthers died in Peoria, Illinois at age 47.
