Wedsel Gary Groom Jr., better known as Buddy Groom, is a Major League Baseball left-handed middle relief pitcher. He was born on July 10, 1965 in Dallas, Texas. He attended the University of Mary Harden-Baylor and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 1987 amateur draft. He played in the minor leagues, and he eventually signed with the Detroit Tigers minor league affiliate in 1990. He moved up through the minors and broke into the majors as a spot starter for the Tigers in 1992. He lost all of his 5 decisions, and he did not win a decision until 1995, his first year as a bonafide reliever. In 1995, he was traded to the Florida Marlins for Mike Myers, where he finished the year. The next year he signed with the Oakland A's, where he played until 1999. He signed with the Baltimore Orioles and played there through the 2004 season. In 2005, he joined the New York Yankees but quickly developed an acrimonious relationship with manager Joe Torre over the playing time he was receiving. On the July 31 trade deadline he was sent to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Groom has a career 30-31 record, a 4.63 earned run average, and 26 career saves. He has started 15 games and has recorded 474 strikeouts going into the 2005 campaign. He led the league in appearances in 1999 with 76, and is 47th on the all time list of appearances with 739, leaving him 11th on the active players list.
