| Chalmers W. "Bump" Elliott was the head coach of the University of Michigan football team from 1959 to 1968. Earlier, he played for the Michigan team. Although his tenure at Michigan was a largely unsuccessful one, he did lead the 1964 Wolverines to a Big Ten title and a win in the Rose Bowl against Oregon State. His final team in 1968 was arguably the most successful, going 8-2, but the final game against Ohio State was a blowout loss, in which Ohio State coach Woody Hayes made his famed quote that he went for two after the Buckeyes' final touchdown because he couldn't go for three.
