Athletes - Byron Leftwich

Byron Anton Leftwich (January 14, 1980 in Washington, DC) is an American football quarterback who currently plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL. Byron Leftwich starred at Marshall University in West Virginia. Under his leadership, Marshall became a more competitive team and played in the first bowl games for the university after many years as a 1-AA school. He is remembered by many for a 64-61 overtime victory over East Carolina University in the 2001 Motor City Bowl. He is also remembered for be carried by two teammates (after breaking his ankle and returning to the game) down the field after a long pass. Leftwich, along with fellow Marshall Alumni Chad Pennington
and Randy Moss
is also credited for helping Mid-American Conference (MAC) gain more national attention.

Style of Play

Leftwich is one of the largest and strongest starting quarterbacks in all of the NFL. This size and strength allows him to throw extremely fast bullet passes and deep balls with ease. He is not very fast and prefers to remain in the pocket regardless of how the offensive line is holding up. His size allows him to bounce off of blitzing linebackers on occasion. He rarely fumbles, and is always smart with the ball, posting one of the best touchdown to interception ratios in the NFL; 15 TDs, 5 INTs. His favorite targets on the Jaguars are wide receiver Jimmy Smith and situational running back Alvin Pearman
. He is showing consistent improvement as his career progresses, and finished the 2005 NFL season with an 89.5 quarterback rating.
