| Covelli Loyce "Coco" Crisp, (born November 1 1979), is a Major League Baseball center fielder who was acquired by the Boston Red Sox on January 27, 2006 from the Cleveland Indians. He attended Los Angeles Pierce College and has a career batting average of .300 as of the end of the 2005 MLB season. The Boston Globe reported that Crisp's grandmother called him "Co" when he was a child, and his two siblings nicknamed him "Coco" after the cereal, Cocoa Krispies. Crisp was originally drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1999. On August 7, 2002, while playing at AA-level New Haven, Crisp was traded to Cleveland to complete an earlier trade for pitcher Chuck Finley. Crisp is an exciting young player who came up in center field, but played left field for the Indians following the emergence in center field of another young outfielder, Grady Sizemore. Over the last two seasons, Crisp has showcased his offensive talent, batting .297 and .300 while knocking in 31 total home runs, playing home games at hitter-friendly Jacobs Field. In 2005 he was fifth in the American league with 42 doubles, and led the league in sacrifice hits with 13. In addition, Crisp has shown decent base-stealing ability, with 54 thefts in 415 games through the 2005 season, while being caught stealing 29 times. Crisp was traded to the Boston Red Sox in January of 2006. The Red Sox sent prospect third baseman Andy Marte, pitcher Guillermo Mota, catcher Kelly Shoppach, a player to be named later, and cash considerations. The Indians sent Crisp along with pitcher David Riske and catcher Josh Bard. He is expected to fill the role Johnny Damon had, as leadoff batter and center fielder.
