Dan Heisman is a United States chess master and author. He is the two-time Open chess champion of Philadelphia (1973 and 1976), a Philadelphia Invitational Chess Champion (1973),and the award-winning Novice Nook columnist for the popular Chess Cafe Web site. His Penn State team won the U.S. Amateur Team Championship in 1972. He has also written 8 books on chess, most aimed at improving adult players. Although he is rated over 2200 by the United States Chess Federation, he is currently inactive as a player.

Dan is well-known throughout the Philadelphia chess scene for promoting local chess, hosting a chess radio show on www.chess.fm, and organizing events like the Philadelphia Championship and Philadelphia Junior Championship.

Originally an engineer, Mr. Heisman has also been a Registered Investment Adviser in PA, and has been a full-time chess instructor since 1996.

Mr. Heisman is married to Shelly Hahn. His first wife, Susan Hollis Bloom Heisman, died of breast cancer in 1994; they had one son, Delen, a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University. Mr. Heisman has a Bachelor's in Mathematics and Masters Degree in Engineering. He was born in Willow Grove, PA in 1950 and currently lives in Wynnewood, PA.
