Dan Koppen (KOH-pin) (born September 12, 1979 in Dubuque, Iowa) is an American football player who is the starting center for the New England Patriots of the NFL.

High School career

Dan Koppen attended Whitehall High School in Whitehall, Pennsylvania. As a senior, he earned All-Area, All-East Penn Conference, and All-State honors, and was named the defensive MVP in the 1997 Kaylee Rotary Bowl. As a junior, he was an All-Conference selection. He also lettered two times each in basketball and track&field.

College career

Koppen attended Boston College, where he was a three-year starter, and a three year All-Big East Conference second team selection

NFL career

After attending Boston College, the hometown Patriots selected him in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft with the 164th overall choice. He was meant to be the backup to Damien Woody, then their starting center. Woody was lost to an injury, however, and Koppen played very well in his place.

After the Patriots won Super Bowl XXXVIII that year, Woody was allowed to sign with the Detroit Lions, leaving Koppen as the permanent starter. He once again helped them win a Super Bowl the following year.

Outside of football

Koppen appears in a Visa commercial with Tom Brady and his fellow offensive linemates Brandon Gorin, Tom Ashworth, Russ Hochstein, and Matt Light. Koppen also appears in an NFL Network commercial with Richard Seymour and Willie McGinest.
