| Dennis Byrd played defensive tackle for the New York Jets of the National Football League. He attended college at the University of Tulsa. He had played for the Jets for 4 seasons beginning in 1989. He was paralyzed from a neck injury during an NFL game against the Kansas City Chiefs in a game on November 29, 1992. On the play, he dove in an attempt to sack the opposing quarterback, but when the quarterback stepped aside, Byrd missed and collided with his fellow Jet teammate Scott Mersereau. The head-first collison resulted in a broken vertebra that left Byrd temporarily paralyzed. Byrd made a full recovery from his injury but never did again play football.
