Athletes - Dickey Simpkins

LuBara Dixon "Dickey" Simpkins (born April 6, 1972 in Fort Washington, Maryland) is an American professional basketball player best known for his tenure with the Chicago Bulls in the late 1990s.

A 6'9" forward/center, Simpkins starred at Friendly High School and Providence College before being selected by the Bulls with the 21st pick in the 1994 NBA Draft. Playing alongside such greats as Michael Jordan
, Scottie Pippen
, and Dennis Rodman
, Simpkins was a benchwarmer for the majority of his Bulls career. Although he earned three NBA Championship rings in 1996, 1997, and 1998, he appeared on the Bulls' playoff roster only once, in 1998, and scored just 591 points for the Bulls from 1994 to 1998. (The Bulls actually traded Simpkins to the Golden State Warriors prior to the 1997-98 NBA season, but re-acquired him during the course of the season. Simpkins scored an additional 54 points in his 19 game tenure with the Warriors.) Following the NBA lockout, however, the Bulls lost most of their star players, and Simpkins became a part-time starter. He averaged a career high 9.1 points per game in 1999, then averaged 4.2 points per game the following season, in which he played a career-high 1,651 minutes. After the Bulls signed Brad Miller
in September 2000, however, the Bulls renounced their rights to Simpkins, who would spend a season in Greece before joining the Atlanta Hawks during the 2001-02 NBA season. He only played one game for the Hawks, though, and spent the rest of the season in Greece and the CBA. Since 2002, Simpkins has enjoyed a lengthy overseas career, playing in Russia, Puerto Rico, Lithuania, Spain, and the Philippines. He is currently playing for GHP Bamberg of the German basketball league.
