Donzell McDonald was born on February 20, 1975 in Long Beach, California. He attended Cherry Creek High School, which was also attended by names like Darnell McDonald (who is his brother), Brad Lidge, and David Aardsma. He went on to attend Yavapai Community College, which, other than McDonald, has yielded alumni such as John Butcher, John Fulgham, Billy Hatcher, Charlie Kerfeld, Alex Madrid, Bob Milacki and Curt Schilling.

Donzell was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 25th round, 706th overall.

He was a LF-CF, who was very speedy. Twice has stole over 50 bases in his professional career, and 6 times has he stolen over 30. Although power was not his biggest asset, he did shown some pop-he hit 7 home runs in 112 games with the Omaha Royals in 2002. Except for his 2000 season, his career strikeout to walk ratio has been pretty subpar.

He made his major league debut in 2001. He played 5 games with the Yankees that year, got 3 at-bats, and 1 hit.

He was last in the Yankees farm system, after being in the Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Royals, and Atlanta Braves farm systems.
