Athletes - Eric Byrnes

Eric James Byrnes (born February 16, 1976 in Redwood City, California) is a left fielder in Major League Baseball who currently plays for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Previously, Byrnes played with the Oakland Athletics (2000-05), Colorado Rockies (2005), and Baltimore Orioles (2005). He bats and throws right handed. Byrnes emerged as a popular player in the Bay Area - particularly as a result of his often humorous spots on local radio. He also guest hosts periodically on KNBR.

From 2000 through 2005, Byrnes has posted a .259 batting average with 48 home runs and 180 RBI in 509 games.

2003 ALDS

Byrnes will always be remembered in Oakland for a play in the 2003 American League Division Series against the Boston Red Sox. The A's had won the first two games of the series and needed to win one out of the next three to advance to the American League Championship Series. Trailing 1-0 in the 6th inning; Byrnes led off with a single, reached second on a stolen base, and reached third on a groundout by Billy McMillon. The next batter, Miguel Tejada
, hit a ground ball to Red Sox pitcher Derek Lowe
. Byrnes made a break for home and collided at home plate with Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek
. Lowe's throw went all the way to the backstop, but Byrnes never touched home plate. After the collison with Varitek, Byrnes got up and started hobbling towards the dougout, thinking he had scored. Meanwhile, Varitek retrieved the ball from the backstop and tagged out Byrnes. Two at-bats later, Tejada was also called out at the plate on another controversial call. Oakland lost that game 3-1 and went on to drop the next two games to lose the series 3-2. Both Tejada and Byrnes would be out of Oakland two years later, as Tejada was signed by the Orioles, and Byrnes was traded to the Rockies.

2005

On July 13, the Oakland Athletics traded Byrnes and minor league prospect Omar Quintanilla
to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for LHP Joe Kennedy
and RHP Jay Witasick.

On July 29, the Rockies then sent Byrnes to the Orioles for fellow outfielder Larry Bigbie
. Byrnes's performance with Baltimore was less than stellar; he hit with an average of .192 with three home runs in 52 games.

In the 2005 offseason, Byrnes signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He hopes to re-juvenate his career after his poor 2005 campaign. He will be joined in the Arizona outfield by all-stars Luis González
and Shawn Green
.
