Athletes - Gale Catlett


Gale Catlett (born in Hedgesville, West Virginia, a native of Morgantown, West Virginia) was a basketball player and more notably a basketball coach for West Virginia University.

Catlett played basketball from 1959 to 1963. During his tenture playing, he helped the Mountaineers to two NCAA tournament berths. After he graduated in 1963, he began his coaching career. He started out with assistant coaching jobs at Richmond, Davidson, Kansas, and Kentucky.

In 1972 he was named head coach of University of Cincinnati. In six seasons there, he took Cincinnati to three NCAA tournament appearances and one NIT appearances.

In 1978 he returned to West Virginia, this time to coach. Over the next 24 years, he posted a 439-276 record, and a career 565-320 record.
