Garry Lewis Templeton (born March 24, 1956 in Lockney, Texas) was a Major League Baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, and New York Mets from 1976 to 1991. Templeton was primarily a shortstop with good batting numbers in an era when that position did not provide much offense.

The Padres acquired him in a trade for Ozzie Smith at the end of the 1981 season for precisely this reason. (In addition, Templeton had made an obscene gesture to some Cardinal fans during the 1981 season; Cardinals management -- understanding that Cardinal fans are among baseball's most loyal and knowledgeable -- elected to cut ties with Templeton as a result.)

Unfortunately, Smith developed into a better hitter with the Cardinals than he had been with the Padres, and was much better defensively than Templeton. As a result, Templeton is unfairly maligned for being part of what was considered a lopsided trade.

He went to school at Valley High School in Santa Ana, CA.
