Athletes - George Strickland

George Bevan Strickland (born January 10, 1926 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is a former shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cleveland Indians, as well as a former manager for the Indians. He was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1943, but he remained in the minor leagues until his contract was picked up by the Boston Red Sox. He was selected by the Pirates in the 1949 Rule V draft, and in 1950, he made his major league debut. In 1952, he was traded to Cleveland, where he would spend the rest of his playing career. After being released by the Tribe in 1960, he stayed as a coach, and when Birdie Tebbetts
suffered a heart attack before the 1964 season, he took over on an interim basis, going 33-39. Tebbetts returned in the middle of the season, but in 1966, Strickland returned to the helm to finish out the season when Tebbetts quit as manager.
