| Gerald Green Jr. (born January 26, 1986 in Houston, Texas) is a professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics of the NBA. He was drafted by the Celtics with the 18th pick of the first round in the 2005 NBA Draft. Green attended Gulf Shores Academy in Houston, Texas. He committed himself to attend Oklahoma State University, but chose instead to enter the draft directly out of high school by hiring an agent and thereby making himself ineligible for college play. Green did not play organized basketball until his sophomore year of high school in which he played for the JV team. In his junior year he made Varsity but his play was cut short because of academic issues. He transferred to Gulf Shores Academy where he repeated his junior year and began to impress his coaches. In his senior year at Gulf Shores he averaged 33 points 12 rebounds 7 assists and 3 block shots. He was named the MVP of the McDonald's All-American game in which he scored 24 points. Green was expected by many analysts to be a top ten pick because of his excellent showing in draft camp but many teams passed on Green, allowing the Celtics to select Green with the 18th pick in the draft. Green is missing one half of his ring finger on his shooting hand from a childhood accident (playing basketball inside); some people have speculated that this may have led teams to pass on him; it's also the origin of his nickname: The Shocker. Green will presumably be one of the last players to jump directly from high school to the NBA, as the new collective bargaining agreement between NBA owners and the NBA Players' Association mandates that American players who enter the NBA Draft must be at least one year removed from the graduation of their high school class and reach age 19 no later than December 31 of the calendar year of the draft. Green averaged 8 points and 1.3 rebounds per game for the Celtics in the 2005 Las Vegas Summer League. After being sent down to the Fayetteville Patriots of the NBA D-League (NBDL) by the Celtics in January of 2006, Green was recalled and activated to an NBA roster position on February 3rd, 2006. He was reassigned to the NBDL, this time to the Florida Flame, on February 16, 2006. He was recalled and activated again on February 21, 2006, and saw his first significant NBA game action on the following night, scoring 13 points and grabbing 9 rebounds in 23 minutes. Green drew comparisons to Houston Rockets superstar Tracy McGrady in the period leading up to the 2005 NBA Draft, being refered to as "the next Tracy McGrady" by some analysts .
