| Guillermo Mota (born July 25, 1973 in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic) is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher who is currently a member of the Cleveland Indians. During the 2005-2006 offseason, Mota was traded from Florida to Boston along with Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell for prospects, including highly regarded shortstop Hanley Ramirez. The trade was officially completed on the night of Thanksgiving 2005. On January 27, 2006, Mota was traded to the Cleveland Indians along with 3rd-base prospect Andy Marte, catcher Kelly Shoppach, a player to be named later and cash considerations for outfielder Coco Crisp, reliever David Riske and catcher Josh Bard. As of January 26, 2006, the deal had been on hold, reportedly due to Mota failing his physical for the Cleveland Indians, although the accuracy of this report has been challenged and was never verified by either the Indians nor the Red Sox. The finalized deal of January 27th did see the addition to the original proposal of "a player to be named later" and cash from the Red Sox, seemingly indicating that whether or not Mota actually failed his physical, the results were discouraging enough to lead to increased concessions by the Red Sox. He has a career ERA of 3.42. He was initially signed as an amateur free agent in 1990 by the New York Mets, who then lost him in the 1996 minor league draft to the Montreal Expos, with whom he made his Major League debut in 1999. Mota was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 2003 season with Wilkin Ruan for relief pitcher Matt Herges and minor leaguer Jorge Nunez, and traded mid-season in 2004 to the Marlins in a deal involving catcher Paul Lo Duca, starting pitcher Brad Penny, and outfielder Juan Encarnación.
