Athletes - Joe Mesi

"Baby" Joe Mesi (born November 27, 1973 in Tonawanda, New York) is the former #1 contender to the WBC heavyweight title. His promising career was setback greatly when he suffered at least two subdural hematomas during a 2004 bout with Vassiliy Jirov. The injuries resulted in his indefinite suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission, which effectively banned him from boxing anywhere in the United States.

The suspension was officially lifted when Mesi's Nevada boxing license expired at the end of 2004. However, he was unable to renew the license due to the concerns of Nevada boxing officials. Mesi finally was granted a license, by the Puerto Rican Boxing Commission, in February 2006. He is scheduled to make his return to the ring on April 1, 2006, in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico against Ron Bellamy.

Mesi has amassed a career record of 29 wins (25 knockouts), 0 losses, and 0 draws.
