| John Melvin Friesz (Born May 19, 1967) in Missoula, Montana, is a former professional football player, a retired NFL quarterback. Friesz grew up in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and was a football standout at the University of Idaho. As quarterback of the Vandals, he succeeded Scott Linehan, current head coach of the St. Louis Rams. In his senior season for the Vandals in 1989, Freisz received the Walter Payton Award as the outstanding player in Division I-AA. He was recruited to the university by head coach Dennis Erickson in 1985. In the 1990 NFL Draft, Friesz was the tenth quarterback selected, taken in the sixth round (138th overall) by the San Diego Chargers.
