Athletes - John L. Watson

John L. Watson is an International Master (IM) of chess and a renowned chess theorist, teacher, and author. He was born in 1951 and grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. He is perhaps best known for his outstanding books and his lucid book reviews. In addition to his nearly 30 books on various aspects of chess, he is the author of the Chessman comic book series. His 1999 book Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy is one of the most highly praised chess books of the last decade. The book received the Book of the year award of the British Chess Federation and has been translated to several languages.

Watson's picture appeared on the cover of the May 1969 issue of Chess Life magazine after he won the first-ever US National High School Chess Championship. He was educated at the Brownell-Talbot School, Harvard, and the University of California at San Diego.

In 1999, Watson suffered a stroke which stunned the chess world. With his survival in doubt, he was the first to receive aid from the Professional Players Health and Benefit Fund of the United States Chess Federation. He has since recovered. Watson resumed teaching and professional play in 2002; he played in the US Chess Championships in 2003 in Seattle. Along with fellow IM John Donaldson, Watson served as commentator at the 2005 US Chess Championships; the two will collaborate again at the 2006 event in San Diego.

Watson, his wife Maura, and their dog Milo make their home in Lincoln, Nebraska.
