Athletes - Johnnie Morton

Johnnie James Morton (born October 7, 1971 in Torrance, California) is a wide receiver in the NFL. He is currently a free agent after being recently waived by the San Francisco 49ers. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 1st round (21st overall) in the 1994 NFL Draft. He played there until 2002, when he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. He played there for three years. He then signed with the 49ers.

College career

He was one of the most gifted wide receivers to play at the University of Southern California, a football factory that churned out such great WR's as Lynn Swann
, Keyshawn Johnson
, Keary Colbert
, and Mike Williams
. Without the physical gifts of speed or size that the others owned, Morton was able to make catches that seemed impossible, or at least unlikely. With very good receiving hands, Morton managed to break USC and Pac-10 records for receptions and yards at a university previously known for running the ball. Without the speed to separate from defensive backs, Morton was forced to just take the ball away with his superior timing and hands. He was a one-man-gang for USC in the mid to late 90's and parlayed his college career into an NFL career of moderate success, mainly due to his lack of NFL speed.

Scouting Report

Morton is a very quick receiver, who can separate from the defender. He is a good open field runner with some niftiness. He can make some very tough catches, hard working and consistent. He will drop some balls thrown right at him. He isn't huge and doesn't have flat-out speed and doesn't react to the ball like he used to.

Personal

Johnnie's younger brother, Chad Morton
, also played at USC and displayed many of the same attributes that made Johnnie great - heart and desire. Both Morton brothers will always be remembered for their great accomplishments at USC, as well as for their professionalism and pure desire.

The Mortons are of mixed ethnicity,African-American and Japanese.
