Athletes - Joyce Gracie

Joyce Riqo Gracie (born June 20, 1974 in Salvador, Brazil) was a Brazilian baseball player who's career with the Yankees was cut tragically short when at the end of the 2003 season he had to return to his home village, due to an extreme family emergency.

While he only played in 4 Major League games, he amassed a combined 33 strikeouts and maintained a 1.20 ERA.

"You hate to see players like this go, especially ones with as much potential as Joyce. Relievers of this caliber are too hard to find these days." Remarks New York Yankees manager, Joe Torre
.

Another notable characteristic of Joyce's presence was his array of obscure pitches. He was the first (and so far only) Yankee to use the "palm ball" in regular season play. He was also known to throw the rare knuckle curve and knuckleball pitches. (Other players known to use this pitch include Tim Wakefield of the Boston Red Sox and Tom Candiotti
of the Los Angeles Dodgers.)
