Athletes - Kellen Winslow II

Kellen Boswell Winslow II (born July 21, 1983) in San Diego. Winslow attended Scripps Ranch High School and is an American football tight end who plays for the Cleveland Browns.

College career

At the University of Miami, Kellen Winslow II was a two-year starter, and finished his career with 119 receptions for 1,365 yards (11.47 yards per reception) and nine touchdowns in 38 games. He also recorded a safety while playing on special teams during his Freshman season.

After his Junior season, he was selected as a First-Team All-American by the Associated Press. He also won the John Mackey Award as the nation's best tight end.

Soldier Comment

After a game against the University of Tennessee, Winslow's comments regarding a hit he made on Tennessee DB Corey Campbell created some controversy.

Asked about the play in a post-game locker room interview, Winslow responded: "This is war. I don't give a flying you know what about a Vol. They don't give a freaking you know what about you. They will kill you. So I'm going to kill them. All you take this down. We don't care about nobody but this U. We don't. If I didn't hurt him, he'd hurt me. They're gunning for my legs, I'll come right back at them. I'm a soldier." Winslow took a lot of criticsm for his rant as many felt he was direspecting the serious nature of real war. Winslow later apologized.

NFL

Winslow was drafted by the Cleveland Browns out of the University of Miami with the sixth pick in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft. The Cleveland head coach, Butch Davis, was the coach who recruited Winslow to the University of Miami before leaving for the NFL prior to ever coaching Winslow in college. Somewhat surprisingly, Winslow was not the first Miami player selected in the 2004 draft. That honor went to Sean Taylor
, who was chosen by the Washington Redskins with the fifth overall selection.

Winslow's father, Kellen Winslow
, was a Hall of Fame tight end for the San Diego Chargers.

When asked about the outlook of his teams season after his injury, Winslow said that "It was going to be tough to get to the playoffs with me completely healthy... the team seems to be in complete shambles. With Sheltons injury, this offense wont do shit." He went on to say that talks about wide receiver Joe Jurevicious reportly trying to iniate a trade to the Browns was "... just another ho-hum hag trying to take Kellen's catches away."

Injuries

A formidable physical specimen with outstanding natural ability, Winslow was expected to give the Cleveland offense an immediate boost. Two games into his rookie season, however, he suffered a broken right fibula. The injury kept him on the sidelines for the remainder of the year after having only recorded five catches for 50 yards. After two operations on the injured appendage, Winslow was supposed to make a full and complete recovery in time for the 2005 season.

This expectation changed after Winslow was injured in a motorcycle accident on May 1st, 2005. His injuries were considered serious, but not life threatening. It was eventually determined that Winslow suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and was put on the Physically Unable-to-Perform (Non Football Injury) list for the 2006 season. Winslow also fought off a six-week staph infection that resulted from his knee injury.
