| Mark Mangino (born August 26, 1956) is in his fourth season as the head football coach at the University of Kansas. His most significant accomplishment to date was leading the team to victory in the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl. Mangino is one of a handful of current Division I-A football coaches who did not themselves play I-A football. He graduated from Youngstown State University in 1987 and was an assistant coach there in his last two years. He also coached at Elwood City High School in Pennsylvania and Geneva College before gaining an associate position at Kansas State University (1991–1998). He was later (1999–2001) the offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma team which beat Florida State for the 2000 national championship. In his current position at Kansas, Mangino has built a defense ranked 11th nationally (Yards per game, 2005 season) featuring third-team All-Americans cornerback Charles Gordon and linebacker Nick Reid. In 2005, his team beat Nebraska 40-15, breaking a losing streak which had dated back to 1968, and was at the time the second longest streak in the nation. The team went on to a 6-5 regular season record and to the Fort Worth Bowl, their second bowl game in three seasons. The team also ranked 6th nationally in total punts. ControversyIn 2004, Mangino paid a $5,000 fine for suggesting that officials acted with favoritism in an offensive pass interference call which affected the outcome of a game against Texas. Mangino implied that money and a BCS berth for the Big 12 conference helped the officials make a call in favor of Texas. He and athletic director Lew Perkins issued public apologies the day after the incident.Season by season results:*includes bowl game[ Visit the complete Wikipedia entry for Mark Mangino ] Some related entries: Maurice Greene | Curtis McClinton | Shaun Cody | Jeremiah Massey | Don Hoak | Billy Gillispie | John Burkett | Koby Clemens | Wayne Chrebet | Portal:Biography | Mark Howe This page is based on the copyrighted Wikipedia article Mark Mangino; it is used under the GNU Free Documentation License.
