Athletes - Marty Hogan

Martin F. Hogan (October 25 1869 - August 15 1923) was an Anglo-American right fielder in Major League Baseball who played for the Cincinnati Reds (1894) and St. Louis Browns (1894-1895). He was 5'8", 145 lbs. He played 40 games over two seasons as an outfielder. Batted Right Threw N/A B.A. .241 F.A..869 Major League Debut was 8/6/1894

Hogan was born in Staffordshire. His parents were pioneer residents of Youngstown, Ohio. Over a period of many years he proved himself both an excellent handler and trainer of major league players. His own athletic career started as a foot racer before he decided to play baseball. His obituary in the Youngstown Daily Vindicator credits him as playing also for Indianapolis. He managed the Youngstown team and was a player on local clubs also.

Prior to his death Hogan managed Brier Hill Park and was an organizer of the Youngstown Gun Club. Brier Hill Park featured both baseball and trap shooting. In 1897 the ex-major leaguer married Miss Agnes Daugherty. Among the activities he took part in around Youngstown included working as a dedicated member of St. Columba's Church.

Hogan was 54 years of age when he died at his home at Ford and Arlington, Youngstown. His death resulted from injuries he received in an auto accident several months before his demise. He was given three blood transfusions which failed in assisting him to recover his strength. Pneumonia, which he had developed a short time before he died, hastened his death.

Funeral services for Hogan were carried out in St. Columba's Church and he was interred in Calvary Cemetery. His wife, Agnes, survived him along with one brother, P.J. Hogan, of Youngstown. A sister, Mrs. John Dillon, died several years earlier.
