Matt Cavanaugh (born 1956, in Youngstown, Ohio near Pittsburgh in the Football Belt) was an American football player.

Cavanaugh played quarterback in the NFL from 1979 to 1991 and earned two Super Bowl rings. He attended Chaney High School and the University of Pittsburgh. In 1976 he quarterbacked the University of Pittsburgh football team along with Tony Dorsett
to a National Championship rout over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Cavanaugh, chosen the Championship Game MVP that day, was the leader of the Pittsburgh Panthers in a 27-3 crushing of the Bulldogs.

His performance was a surprise to college football fans after they had chosen his teammate and college rushing record setter Tony Dorsett
the Heisman Trophy winner that season. His pro-career was spent with both the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants, playing backup quarterback in both 1984's Super Bowl XIX and 1990's Super Bowl XXV.

He retired from playing following the 1991 season with close to 5,000 total yards and 30 touchdown throws.

Since retrirement he has become:
  • The Chief Recruiter and Offensive Coach for the University of Pittsburgh between 1992-1993,
  • Offensive Coach for the Arizona Cardinals between 1994-1995 and
  • Offensive Coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 1996.
  • Offensive Coordinator for the Chicago Bears 1997-1998.
  • Offensive Coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens in 2001; he won a third Super Bowl Ringserving the team as the second coach between 1999 and 2004.
  • Offensive coordinator for his alma mater the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.
