Matt Painter (born August 27, 1970 in Muncie, Indiana) is the men's basketball head coach at Purdue University.

Painter attended Purdue as an undergraduate. He played basketball under coach Gene Keady from 1989-1993, helping to lead the Boilermakers to three NCAA tournaments and one NIT appearance.

After graduation, Painter spent one year each at Washington and Jefferson College and Barton College before moving to Division I as an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois University. After three years at Eastern Illinois he moved to Southern Illinois University in 1998 as an assistant to head coach Bruce Weber. Painter took over the head coaching job in 2003-2004 when Weber left for the University of Illinois. He lead the SIU team to a 25-5 record and a berth in the NCAA tournament.

In 2004, Painter was recruited by Purdue as the replacement for retiring head coach Gene Keady, signing a 6-year contract. He worked under Keady for one season as associate before assuming the head coach position in the fall of 2005.
