Mel Purcell (born July 18 1959, in Joplin, MO, U.S.A.) is a former World No. 17 tennis player in the ATP tennis rankings. Mel is the head coach of the Murray State University Men's Tennis Team. Purcell's finest moment was when he reached the Quarterfinals of Wimbledon. He beat Ivan Lendl and Boris Becker.

Mel graduated Murray High School and went on to the University of Memphis where he played for one year. He transferred to the University of Tennessee, where he won an NCAA doubles championship with teammate Rodney Harmon.

Following this career high, Mel joined the professional tour where he was named Rookie of the Year. Purcell still enjoys matches on the Jimmy Connors Champions Tour where he is able to play with and beat Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, and John McEnroe.

Mel has two children, Happy and Reilly.
