Athletes - Michael Bennett

Michael Bennett (born August 13, 1978 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is an American Football player who currently plays running back for the New Orleans Saints of the NFL.

High school career

Bennett attended Milwaukee Tech High School. As a senior, in football, he was ranked the top player in the state, and was an All-State selection. In the 1998 state track meet, he set records in the 100, and the 200 meter dash.

College career

Bennett attended the University of Wisconsin, where he spent two years as a backup to Ron Dayne
. He only started two games but rushed for 1979 yards. He also was a sprinter on his college's track team, posting personal best times of 10.18 on the 100-meter dash, and 20.66 seconds on the 200-meter dash. He presently runs the 100 meter dash in an amazing 10.18 seconds (and a 10.00 wind-aided run).

NFL Career

Bennett was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2001 NFL draft. Bennett, thanks to his well known speed, was viewed as being a competent backup to the Vikings previous star running back Robert Smith who retired suddenly after posting the best numbers of his professional career. Bennett did not achieve greatness until his second season with the Vikings when he led the team in rushing with 1296 rushing yards with an additional 351 receiving yards. Unfortunately for both Bennett and the Vikings, his career was stalled due to injuries following that breakout year. Because of his perceived fragility, the Vikings drafted running backs to replace Bennett, Onterrio Smith
, Mewelde Moore
and Ciatrick Fason
. None of the three replacements though have proven themselves worthy of the starting role, either due to injury , drug suspensions or find themselves buried on the team depth chart .

Because of his being injury prone during his professional career, the Vikings have decided to let Bennett leave as a free agent at the conclusion of the 2005-2006 season. One of the teams rumoured to be interested in Bennett are the Carolina Panthers. However, he was signed instead by the New Orleans Saints to serve as the backup to Deuce McAllister.
