| Miguel Jerez Batista Decartes (born February 19, 1971 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Over his career, Batista has played for seven teams and been utilized extensively as both a starter and a reliever. His best seasons came in 2001 and 2003 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, when he went 11-8 and 10-9 with 3.36 and 3.54 ERAs respectively. He signed a 3-year $13.1-million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays prior to the 2004 season but struggled in his first season with his new club, posting a 4.80 ERA and losing his starter's job late in the season. In 2005, Batista was the Jays closer and had a 4.10 ERA and 31 saves. He was put on the trading block after the Blue Jays signed their new closer B.J. Ryan to a large contract. They then traded Miguel back to the Arizona Diamondbacks after the 2005 season along with Orlando Hudson for Troy Glaus and prospect Sergio Santos. Aside from being a baseball player, Batista is known for his love of poetry and philosophy, and he has written a book of poetry in Spanish titled Sentimientos en Blanco y Negro. Batista published THROUGH THE EYES OF THE LAW, a thriller about a serial killer, The novel was released January the 25th in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and the 10th of February in San Juan de Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico, where it has had a great success in very few months. Even though, at the moment Miguel Batista must set all his passion into baseball, which he describes as the job that has given him the experiences to find answers to life, faith, justice and the mission in life as a professional, as a man and as a human being; he ought to use his very limited time off to make the respective revisions for the second edition of THROUGH THE EYES OF THE LAW and also coordinate it, so it follows its own way and gets to the Hispanic public in the United States, besides the preparations for the English version to be release in a few months in Phoenix, Arizona. ANTE LOS OJOS DE LA LEY (THROUGH THE EYES OF THE LAW) develops a plot where real facts and evidences face faith, a case in which all the proofs project the truth, but question what is right when faith impose itself. In the story, the lawyer Samuel Escobar and the priest Damian try to demonstrate that Thomas Santiago, a fourteen year old child, is innocent. He can not be the serial killer the Arizona Police is looking for… even if all the evidence points the contrary. Without a doubt this book –which was based on interviews and investigations made for five years- drive us into a maze full of questions and answers, where is difficult to difference the reality from the fantasy. On the hands of the fans and the readers stay these great challenges for the author and his book.
