| Michael Joseph Dunleavy, Jr. (born September 15 1980 in Lake Oswego, Oregon), is an NBA basketball player. Dunleavy currently plays forward for the Golden State Warriors, who selected him third overall in the 2002 NBA Draft. He is the son of long-time NBA player and coach Mike Dunleavy, Sr.. His coach at Duke University, Mike Krzyzewski, called Dunleavy ”the most versatile player we’ve had here since Grant Hill." Krzyzewski's comparison is not without merit, as Dunleavy is 6'9" with good court vision, and the ability to play four positions. However, Dunleavy's NBA career-to-date has been something of a mixed bag. He is a decent shooter, posting a 53.5 True Shooting % for his career, and is well-trained in basketball fundamentals (as one would expect from a coach's son). Unfortunately, he has an extremely thin frame and lacks quickness, which hampers him on defense and renders him virtually useless in the paint. Dunleavy still has the potential to be a fixture in the league, but without significant improvement he will be plagued by his high draft position (#3 overall), which forces comparisons to current stars also drafted with the third pick: Carmelo Anthony, Pau Gasol, Baron Davis, Chauncey Billups and up-and-comers Ben Gordon and Deron Williams. In November 2005, the Warriors signed Dunleavy to a 5-year, $44 million contract extension. About the deal, Golden State General Manager Chris Mullin said, "The way Mike performed, the way he conducted himself and the way we run our organization, we both felt it was something that we wanted." The deal has drawn criticism from fans, though, in light of the other large (and, arguably, unwarranted) contracts that the Warriors franchise have signed with Adonal Foyle and Derek Fisher. Because Dunleavy is only 25, it is likely far too early for any value judgment about the contract to be made. During the 2005-2006 season, Dunleavy lost his starting role as small forward, due in part of the fact he is shooting less than 40% from the field and less than 25% from the three point line. He did get his starting job back later in the season.
