Athletes - Mike Matusow

Michael (Mike) "The Mouth" Matusow is an American professional poker player, residing in Henderson, Nevada.

Mike began playing in 1986 and got his nickname of "The Mouth" because he loves to talk at the table. Some consider him one of the true entertainers in the game. Others consider him one of the most annoying players in the game. He is known in the poker world for his habit of making spectacular misjudgements (known as "Mike Matusow Blow-ups" or "Mike Matusow Meltdowns") when on the verge of victory.

He has had some successful showings in tournament poker, primarily in No Limit Texas Hold'em and Omaha High Low events. In 1999, he picked up his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet, by winning the $3,500 No-Limit Hold'em Event. In 2001, he made the final table at the WSOP main event, before being knocked out making an audacious bluff by betting all-in before the flop with seven-deuce offsuit.

His second WSOP bracelet came in 2002 when he beat Daniel Negreanu heads-up in the $5,000 Omaha High Low event.

In 2003, the Las Vegas police department assigned an undercover narc to befriend Matusow, gain his trust, and convince Matusow to procure cocaine on his behalf. The undercover investigation lasted over a year, and resulted in the arrest of Matusow on a drug violation. He received a six month prison sentence and was released in April 2005.

In October 2004, he finished third in the World Poker Tour (WPT) UltimateBet Aruba Classic, which earned him $250,000.

In total, he has nine final table finishes at the WSOP, including a ninth place finish (beating out 5,610 other players) worth $1,000,000 at the 2005 main event. He had another strong performance on November 8, winning the WSOP Tournament of Champions in a heads-up battle against "Cowboy" Hoyt Corkins
and earning another $1,000,000 in the process, along with a trophy (which does not count as a WSOP bracelet).

He plays online poker under the following aliases: "dill pickle" (ultimatebet); "mrpokejoke" (PokerStars); and "Mike Matusow" (Full Tilt Poker).

On the February 7th, 2006 episode of King of Vegas on Spike TV, Matusow was defeated in the Texas Holdem final deathmatch by Evelyn Ng. He left with no earnings from the tournament.

As of 2006, his total live tournament winnings exceed $3,395,000.
