Athletes - Omar Minaya

Omar Minaya is currently the general manager of the New York Mets, a position he took in September 2004. He is known for his aggressiveness related to player trades and free agent signings.

Born in the Dominican Republic, he moved to Queens, New York City when he was eight years old. He played in the minor leagues for a short time before joining the Texas Rangers' scouting team in 1985, where he helped in the signing of players such as Sammy Sosa
and Juan Gonzalez.

Minaya worked his way up to assistant G.M. with his hometown New York Mets, and later became the first Hispanic G.M. when he was named to that post in 2002 as a member of the Montréal Expos. Despite working with severe financial limitations, Minaya was very aggressive in his attempt to make the Expos a winner, adding Bartolo Colon and Cliff Floyd
in a pair of mid-season trades.

Since joining the Mets in 2004, he has heavily recruited Latino players, including fellow Dominican Pedro Martinez and Puerto Ricans Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado
. Said Minaya upon acquiring Martinez, "He's a guy that makes the brand."

Under his guidance, the Mets were billed by many as having the best offseason following the 2005 season. They acquired closer Billy Wagner
, first baseman Carlos Delgado
and veteran catcher Paul Lo Duca
. He also strengthened the bench by adding utility infielder Jose Valentin
, first baseman Julio Franco
and center fielders Tike Redman
and Endy Chavez.
