Athletes - Reggie McNeal

Reggie McNeal (b. September 20, 1983) was a quarterback for Texas A&M University. In his sophomore and junior years he was heralded as "the most complete dual-threat quarterback in the nation" by ESPN. One driving factor behind the hype was his outstanding performance as a freshman substitute quarterback, where he successfully led the unranked Texas Aggies to an upset win over #1 Oklahoma in 2002. Reggie was ranked as the number 1 athlete prospect coming out of high school, and his performance against Oklahoma led many to feel that good times, including a possible national championship, were ahead in College Station.

In the end, his career proved to be disappointing. In his senior season, Texas A&M went 5-6 and was not invited to a college bowl game. The season proved to be too much of a disappointment for many fans, who began openly calling for a change in head coach. McNeal's final game at Texas A&M was at home against The University of Texas on Friday, November 23, 2005. The Aggies lost 40-29. McNeal did not play during this game due to injury.

McNeal's defenders point to the difficult environment at Texas A&M as a significant factor in his difficulties. While at Texas A&M, McNeal had to deal with playing under two philosophically different head coaches, three offensive coordinators, and several different position coaches along with very underdeveloped talent surrounding him. McNeal's greatest failure was his inability to lead Texas A&M to a victory over their rivals (University of Texas) in four attempts. McNeal's professional career will bear out the truth.
