Rex Grossman (born August 23, 1980 in Bloomington, Indiana) is an American football player who currently plays quarterback for the Chicago Bears. Both his father, Daniel, and paternal grandfather, Rex, played football for Indiana University.

High school career

He played quarterback for Bloomington South High School in Bloomington, Indiana, which he led to the 5A state title his senior year, before matriculating at the University of Florida in 1999.

College career

After redshirting his freshman year, Grossman found himself the third-string quarterback in an extremely competitive group that included senior Jesse Palmer and highly rated true freshman Brock Berlin. Nevertheless, after an injury to Palmer, he quickly established himself as the Gators' starter, achieving the third highest pass efficiency rating in the history of the NCAA. His sophomore year he came second to University of Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch in the closest vote in Heisman Trophy history. He broke or approached many records set by Danny Wuerffel.

After an undistinguished junior season under new Florida head coach Ron Zook, who had replaced Steve Spurrier at the end of the previous season, Grossman opted to forego his final year of collegiate eligibity and declared for the NFL draft, and was picked in the first round by the Chicago Bears, spending his rookie season largely in a reserve capacity.

NFL career

He did start the last three games, after the Bears had already been eliminated from playoff contention, then secured the starting job the following year until injury cut his season short.

Fully recovered, Grossman married Alison Miska in Bloomington, IN shortly before the start of the 2005 training camp and entered training camp as the starting quarterback. However, disaster struck again in the second pre-season game when Grossman broke his ankle, forcing him to miss the first 13 games of the season.

On December 18, 2005, Grossman returned to the field, scoring a touchdown on his first drive against the Atlanta Falcons. Grossman's success in that game led to him being named the starter the following week. Helping the Bears clinch their division with a win over the Green Bay Packers on Christmas Day, 2005, Grossman took over for rookie Kyle Orton, who led the team to ten victories.

In Grossman's first ever playoff game, he completed 17 of 41 passes with one touchdown and one interception.

During the 2006 free agency period, the Bears signed veteran quarterback Brian Griese to compete with Grossman and to ensure the presence of a quality backup should Rex be injured once again. At the end of his third season, Grossman is gaining a reputation as an underachieving, injury-prone player. He will look to erase that with a solid 2006 campaign.
