Samuel Filmore (Sam) West (b. October 5, 1904 in Longview, Texas - d. November 23, 1985 in Lubbock, Texas) was a center fielder in Major League Baseball. From 1927 through 1942, West played for the Washington Senators (1927-1932, 1938-1941), St. Louis Browns (1933-1938) and Chicago White Sox. He batted and threw left handed.

Career

In a 16-season career, West posted a .299 batting average with 75 home runs and 838 RBI in 1753 games played.

Best season

  • 1931 - .333 BA, 91 RBI, 175 hits, 43 doubles and 13 triples (career highs)

Highlights

  • Was a member of the first American League All-Star team in 1933. He also was selected in 1934-35 and 1937
  • Collected eight .300 seasons
  • Led AL outfielders in putouts twice, double plays three times, and assists once
