Athletes - Terry Dischinger


Terry Gilbert Dischinger (born November 14 1940 in Terre Haute, Indiana) is a former professional basketball player in the NBA.

Dischinger, a 6"7" forward, was made the first pick of the second round of the NBA Draft in 1962 out of Purdue University by the Chicago Zephyrs. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in the 1962-1963 season after averaging 25.5 points and eight rebounds per game. He retired in 1973 and holds career per game averages of 13.8 points and 5.6 rebounds. He was a three-time All-Star.

He coached two games for the Detroit Pistons during the 1971-72 season, as a player-coach. In addition to the Pistons and the Zephyrs, he also played for the Baltimore Bullets and the Portland Trail Blazers. He was a member of the team that won the gold medal in the 1960 Olympics.

Dischinger now practices Orthodontics in Portland, Oregon.
