Davey Moore was the name of two different world champion boxers. Both met tragic fates, causing some boxing fans to regard the name "Davey Moore" as cursed.

The first Davey Moore

The first Davey Moore (1933-1963) won the world Featherweight championship in 1959.

After winning his first fight of the year in 1963, his luck ran out, and in a nationally televised fight, fans witnessed him being pounded against his own corner. He lost the fight by a knockout in the tenth round, and his injuries were severe.

Moore died two days later at a medical center in the Los Angeles area. He had a record of 55 wins, 8 losses and 3 draws, with 30 wins by knockout.

The second Davey Moore

The second Davey Moore was born at a time when the first Davey Moore was a world boxing champion.

In 1982, this Moore won the WBA world junior middleweight title by a knockout. He lost his title the next year; while he never left fighting, and won a number of matches, his record declined into mediocrity.

One morning in early June 1988, Moore was leaving his home, and stepped out of his car to open the garage door. He left the car idling in reverse; it subsequently backed toward him, crushing him. He died quickly at the scene.
